Anyone running Mandriva with XFCE instead of gnome or kde? I was just wondering how it works for you.
I'm starting to move my systems toward XFCE instead of KDE and gnome now.
We have a dedicated (volunteer) Xfce packager - Tomasz Pawel Gajc - so our Xfce is pretty good. I haven't used it myself extensively, but I know quite a few people do, and from my own quick look it seemed fine. He is planning to bring out an (unofficially supported) 2009 Xfce One image soon.
I used it for a while on an old PC I have. However, I was slightly dissapointed by the performance. I thought it would run appreciably faster than KDE but it didn't.
Xfce is not in fact that light any more (a stock Xfce desktop in 2009 uses 10MB *more* RAM than a stock GNOME desktop). And you also have to factor in that the most significant factor for performance is the apps you run: xterm opens fast in KDE 4, and OpenOffice.org opens slow in IceWM.
LXDE is emerging as a good choice for a truly lightweight desktop alternative, you might want to try that (task-lxde).
I'm running it and it's pretty impressive so far.....
