Sound has too much bass

While listening to music on Amarok, all my music sounds like it has too much bass.

The equalizer in Amarok is turned off.

I am using external speakers connected through an amplifier on my laptop.

My master volume is at 73 and PCM volume is at 71 (through alsamixer).

Any suggestions?

Just as an example:

On my computer the same song sounds "heavier" and louder (in a bad way) than on my iPod. Volume levels are almost identical (although I did that by ear and not scientifically).

I can also hear a hiss from my external speakers. Although when I plug in my iPod there is no hiss.

The 'hiss' can come from a bad earth wire.

I also have too much bass and no "bass" settings in sound preference

Are you using replaygain?

Make sound quality better in 2.5 Karmic (2.5 is Ububtu Ultimate Edition, same as 9.10)
