Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Random Freeze / Hang-up

I can confirm the same behaviour on an affected system. I had seen this lock-up previously and discounted it as a completely separate issue, but I can confirm that this lock-up does not happen on the same machine running kernel 2.6.34.

(To recap, my machine freezes with kernel 2.6.32-22 and works correctly with 2.6.34).

So this looks like a viable test case for identifying affected machines (because I think there are machines with unrelated problems with very similar symptoms) and for testing proposed solutions.

I've attempted the steps on a machine that doesn't freeze and can't reproduce. I will attempt the steps on a machine that does freeze and report back. This will be excellent if we can reproduce without having to wait hours for an eventual freeze when testing workarounds!

Now that we know how to make the bug active we can use a non-affected machine to identify what is being called during the operation that triggers the bug (something low level)? Not that I know how to do that or anything

I've got 10.04 on 3 machines with no lockups unless the IP packets start flying (even then it's rare).

It freezes as soon as I log in. The only thing I have the time to open is Firefox before everything goes down.

I have totally blacklisted nouveau and anything to do with it, I read that having it and the nvidia drivers installed together caused issues.

Let's see how this goes...

Looking good so far, moderate use over the past week, no lock ups.

Found this interesting comment on a separate thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...08#post9387908).

I had the same problem with a fresh install of 10.04. As per the suggestion I uninstalled gnome-screensaver and was then able to switch users without the black screen defect. I then installed it again intending to confirm/check the results and found that the problem remained fixed: with gnome-screensaver re-installed I am now able to switch users without the black screen defect.

I'm going to give this a try when I get home this evening.

You say that your system is functioning without freezes using 2.6.34-5 PAE, so what is the problem?

I can't use it because the AMD Radeon driver don't support it (I get some errors when I try to install fglrx modules).
Official 2.6.32 > Unstable,
Unofficial 2.6.34 > no accellerated driver video (open driver it's bugged and without a lot of functionalities atm).
