That looks correct enough. What error message are you getting when you try to start conky from a terminal?

Follow these steps:

1. Go here: https://launchpad.net/~norsetto/+archive/ppa/+packages
2. Click on: conky - 1.7.2-0ubuntu1~jaunty2
3. Download the right version:
   • 64 BIT: conky-all_1.7.2-0ubuntu1~jaunty2_amd64.deb <<<--- for generic (i686)
     
   • 32 BIT: conky-all_1.7.2-0ubuntu1~jaunty2_i386.deb
4. Synaptic - and "Completely Remove" conky <<-- or you get errors
5. Double click on the conky-all_1.7.2-0ubuntu1~jaunty2_amd64.deb file you got and let Package Manager install it.

Now do a:

conky -V

and see if you get the ending:

  * Lua

  Lua bindings:
   * Cairo
   * Imlib2

Right, forgot about imlib2 support.

Add this to your conky config above TEXT

own_window yes
own_window_type desktop
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_hints undecorate,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager,below

If you then see little drop shadows around your conky boarder you will need to go into ccsm and under window decoration / shadow windows input the following:

any & !(name=Conky)

You should then be all set. Let me know if you still have an issue.

it pretty much does bad stuff to the DE, things are stuck, windows behave wrong, sorta like in windows when you drag a window and you can see a million times of the same window.

Right, forgot about imlib2 support.

The only reason I picked up on it is I'm using #! 9.04.01 and I needed that file to get rings working and I knew the imlib2 was needed for images.

When I first tried installing over Conky v1.6.1 it gave errors, what's why I suggest deleting it. Of course with Conky v.1.7.2 already there it might just say package is the same and have a [Reinstall] button as an option.
