HOWTO: Enable DRI (3D support) on SAVAGE cards

are these steps applicable to hardy?

i am having problems with my video (s3 vt8375 prosavage8 km266/kl266), i can't run compiz and can't enable desktop effects. i checked direct rendering (using glxinfo |grep rendering), the result was 'yes'.

when i checked the screen and graphics preferences, the graphics card is s3 savage4 but without driver and blank video memory. when i try using other s3 savage drivers, the display would go blank.

what can i do so i can use the 3d and other capabilities of my video card?
