Okay guys, what are your thoughts? I am totally new to Linux/Ubuntu and a BSOD on my Dell Vista computer is what brought me to trying Ubuntu so I can save the data on my C: drive before reinstalling Windows.

How can I successfully boot Ubuntu when every time I try Install Ubuntu or Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer, I'm getting this Busybox stuff every time:

So have you done what it tells you to do?
    Run
    Code:
    chkdsk /f
    on windows
    and reboot windows twice
    and shut windows down properly.

    And welcome to the forum

I can try running that in the command prompt but can't shut down properly because Windows won't even load, getting the black screen with a mouse pointer and nothing else.

    It's a windows command and it's
    Code:
    chkdsk /f
    I had a typo.
What version of windows? xp, vista, 7

you can download a free recovery cd here for windows that may fix your windows booting problem.
    http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/window...disc-download/

Burn the cd and boot up with it in the cd drive and and try to repair windows.

Once you get it to boot go to Start > Run
    and run the command.

From memory I think it was
Or open My Computer and right click on C: drive > Properties > Tools > check disk for errors with the fix option checked.

Or right click on My Computer > Manage > Disk Management > select the windows partition. Right click and select check for errors.

It will have to be restarted to actually run chkdsk.
Then you can get your stuff off of it and re-install it.

Vista. So I ran chkdsk /f and restarted twice and finally shut down using the shutdown command in the command prompt.
Still, I try to start Ubuntu and it goes into the loading symbol, followed by a blank black screen, then I press Spacebar and see the same BusyBox text as before.

Thank you, it is downloading now. I'm also downloading Ubuntu v7.10 because I heard there were issues with the later versions and DELL computers.

Vista recovery disc didn't work. The only thing left to try is Ubuntu 7.10 but I am not confident it will be any different. Any more ideas or suggestions?

Re: initramfs + busybox trouble installing

    The saga continues.

I need to run EMC2 and I believe this is the only Ubuntu version available for it.

Toshiba 225cds Laptop intel P133, 32768KB installed memory, 1.4G HDD,
    No floppy
No SATA/RAID options just "Enhanced IDE (Normal)" and "Standard IDE"
    Booting from the CD
    Burned CD "ubuntu-8.04-desktop-emc2-aj13-i386.iso"
    Selected "English"
    Selected "Install Ubuntu"
    F4 selected "Normal"
Tried all of the boot line suggestions in the preceding 41 pages.
    Screen with "Quiet" removed.

    All help will be appreciated

    {edit}
I typed "Exit" and got this second screen shot...
If I remove the CD it still boots fine back to Windows.

Before arriving at the "iinitramfs" prompt and with Quiet off, the Ubuntu splash screen shows and several items in orange text get an "OK" alongside.

The third item on this growing list is "Mounting Root File System" but it does not get an "OK"
The fourth item is "mounting scripts/casper" and it gets an "OK".

"The Mounting Root File System" not getting an OK, may explain why the second screen shot mention the missing root drive system.
