Question Hardy does not recognize video card Intel Cantiga

I am setting up Hardy on a Sony Vaio FW190. According to lspci it uses an "Intel Corporation Cantiga Memory Controller Hub (rev 07)"
    video card.

Installation through the alternate cd went fine, but now at boot time when X comes up the screen is all white and unusable.

I attempted to use the "safe graphics mode" and that basically loaded the "vesa" driver in xorg.conf but the result is only marginally better and still unusable.

Has anyone any experience with getting X (X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90) working on a Cantiga card?

    Here is the Xorg.0.log:

Re: Hardy does not recognize video card Intel Cantiga

I was just looking at a VAIO VGN-FW140E and am thinking about buying it.
My research lead me to a site Phoronix that did a review on this GPU.
I recommend researching it by it's common name 4500MHD.

    http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag..._x4500hd&num=1

this website was saying it is needing to use a new version of the MESA drivers that have not been released yet. However, Intrepid Alpha 3 did include them. You may want to try running the Alpha 4 to see if that works.

I am probably going to buy the laptop tomorrow, and if so then I will be facing the same battle as you. Perhaps we can battle it together.

How does the rest of your system work?

How about glxgears, do you get anything?

tamagotono: thanks for the link I'll check it out. Also: sure, let's battle together!

Given the fact that I have no X I am still using mostly Vista so my judgement is impaired by the OS (and the staggering amount of crapware the PC came with, as usual). This was a replacement for a less than one year old Vaio FZ190 that got stolen about a month ago. Once I got all correctly setup on that one I really liked it, for reliability and performance; I expect this new one to be as good at least (and I got one more inch of screen to look at!).

Codename: I tried several glx... commands and they all returned the same, but am not sure about glxgears in particular. I have not the laptop with me now and will post the result later on tonight (PST time). Thanks for your help!

Well, I just bought the VGN-FW140E with this problem chipset. I have only had a chance to play with it for a short while so all that I have found is if you edit your xorg.conf file and under 'configured device' add

    driver "vesa"

then restart X, you can at least get a 800X600 display. I am going to try some other intel settings and see if I get any luck. Then I will work on getting the proper drivers going..

Hope this makes it at least a little bit more bearable.

Re: Hardy does not recognize video card Intel Cantiga

tamagotono: that's almost what I got whenstarting in "safe graphics" mode, with the exception that I could not get a usable screen. I might have not tried the 800x600 resolution (though I thought I did), I'll give it another try and let you know.

Codename: no suck luck, all the glx* commands return the same error ("canot open display"), except glxdemo which goes in segmentation fault.

tamagotono: I remembered correctly and even with a 800x600 I got an unusable scattered screen. It looks like I'm one step behind: could you post here the xorg.conf that worked for you with 800x600?

Guido_damico: here is a copy of the xorg.conf file that is working for me with 800x600 VESA mode. The only modification I made to the default configuration is the driver line that I have made bold. I hope this helps. 800x600 sucks but it's better than nothing.
